Advocacy Groups Continue To Call For An End To Hair Relaxer Products

Loreal and others continue to sell toxic hair relaxer chemicals in major retail stores

Friday, February 10, 2023 - Women with uterine or other forms of reproductive system cancer are encouraged to contact a hair relaxer lawyer to join the growing group of women holding the manufacturers accountable. The lawsuits are being organized into multidistrict litigation (MDL) to streamline repetitive court processes and answer complex scientific questions that juries may face. The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation has created a centralized docket for lawsuits against L'Oreal USA Inc. and other hair care product companies, alleging that exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) has caused injuries, including cancer. Chemical hair straighteners were marketed directly to Black women without regard for their long-term health. As a result, thousands of Black women may now suffer from uterine cancer and are seeking answers. Civil rights advocacy groups are calling for major retailers in the United States to remove chemical hair straighteners from store shelves and ban the sale of these products in the future. "Racial justice organization Color of Change is urging consumers to sign a petition demanding that Target, ShopRite, Giant, Food Lion, and other major retailers remove toxic products, such as lye relaxers and hair dyes, from their shelves. The group cites studies linking the use of these products to several health issues and the disproportionate use of these products by Black consumers as the reasons for the petition, " according to CosmeticsandToiletries.com.

Legal experts predict that over 1,000 hair relaxer lawsuit claims could be filed in 2023 and beyond against several companies that manufacture chemical hair straighteners, accusing their products of causing uterine, breast, or ovarian cancer. The main target of these lawsuits is Loreal and its subsidiaries. The list of products that have been used by women with cancer and are mentioned in the lawsuits includes Paris Smooth Intense Ultimate Straight Shampoo and Conditioner, Paris X-Tenso Moisturist Hair Straightening Cream, Paris Advanced Hairstyle AIR DRY IT Wave Swept Spray, Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray Supreme Hold, NS Paris EverSleek Frizz Finish Oil-In-Serum, among many others. These products contain caustic and potentially carcinogenic chemicals, such as sodium hydroxide, formaldehyde, ammonium thioglycolate, parabens, and artificial fragrances. Sodium hydroxide is a strong alkaline that can cause eye and hair damage, as well as burn the scalp. This is particularly dangerous because any chemical that comes into contact with the scalp can be absorbed into the bloodstream through the pores of the skin. Formaldehyde can cause respiratory distress when its fumes are inhaled during hair styling after straightening. Ammonium thioglycolate causes similar problems as the other two chemicals. Parabens, which are linked to hormonal disruptions and cancer of the female reproductive system, pose the greatest threat to the female reproductive system. Inhaling artificial fragrances can also be dangerous.
