An Israeli Study Blames Glyoxylic Acid In Hair Straighteners For Causing Kidney Disease

Glyoxylic acid is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream then to the kidneys causing damage

Tuesday, March 7, 2023 - The controversy surrounding the toxicity of chemical hair straighteners and relaxers continues to spread around the globe. Not only is a class action lawsuit against the makers of hair relaxers forming in Canada but other nations around the world have taken notice. The Times of Israel (TI) is reporting on a ground-breaking new study that concluded that chemicals in hair relaxers can cause kidney cancer. Scientists, there have concluded that hair relaxers should be banned in the country. Interestingly, the study points to the correlation between using chemical hair relaxers and kidney cancer and states that more doctors will start to ask their kidney disease patients questions about their chemical hair relaxer usage. According to TI, " We documented 26 cases of acute kidney injury over the last three years, and since the research was conducted the number of cases in Israel has risen to 38 people," she told The Times of Israel on Thursday. "Though we suspect this is just the tip of the iceberg for Israel, and believe there are many cases elsewhere. The patients in the study experienced abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and scalp rash after using the hair straightening products. The average age was 28, most had no previous medical problems, and one of the women -- all patients were female -- was pregnant." Many Black women with uterine, breast, and ovarian cancer state in their hair relaxer lawsuit claims against hair straightener manufacturers Loreal, Revlon, and others, that they were sold on using hair relaxers as early as age 9, and the repeated, long-term use of the product caused their disease. The study shows that glyoxylic acid is absorbed through the skin or scalp, into the bloodstream, and immediately into the kidneys causing damage, Patients with kidney damage often require being placed on a dialysis machine to filter their blood while awaiting a kidney transplant.

This year, there have been about 75 hair relaxer lawsuit claims filed in the US against several chemical hair relaxer producers and distributors. According to the complaints, certain chemicals in hair relaxers and straighteners disrupt a woman's endocrine system, which can lead to hair relaxer uterine cancer and fibroid tumors. Reproductive system cancers are typically treated with harsh chemotherapy after surgery, which prevents the patient from having children in the future. The new accusations of kidney disease put a new spin on potential lawsuits. Kidney disease is often severe and requires a kidney transplant. Millions of women may have kidney disease at one of many different stages and not know it. " There were probably a lot of mild cases that didn't get to a hospital. There may be many women who are asymptomatic but who have kidney damage as a result of these products," according to Prof. Linda Shavit of Shaare Zedek Medical Center who led the Israeli research. Close to 100 hair relaxer lawsuits allege that various chemicals in hair relaxers offered by Loreal, Revlon, and other companies cause uterine cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and now kidney cancer.
