High Levels Of Formaldehyde In Popular Brands Of Hair Relaxers Allegedly Cause Cancer
Loreal is accused of covering up what they knew or had an obligation to know about the toxicity of formaldehyde in their chemical hair straighteners
Monday, February 27, 2023 - Hair relaxer cancer lawsuit filed in recent years against LOreal allege that the company was aware that their chemical hair straightener products contained "contain high levels of formaldehyde, a known carcinogen". For example, L'Oreal USA was the target of a lawsuit in California in 2020 that claimed the company was aware of the potential risks related to its hair straighteners but neglected to inform customers. LOreal was allowed to get away with failing to disclose the product's toxicity under the existing and lax consumer regulatory requirements of the day placed on the cosmetics industry, the same lack of government scrutiny of the cosmetics industry that could be responsible for permitting companies like Johnson & Johnson to sell baby powder made from talc that contained asbestos, another carcinogen. The US Food And Drug Administration (FDA) failed to regulate consumer beauty care products, preferring instead to place the responsibility of ensuring product safety on the company. Unfortunately, some healthcare companies viewed the cost of settling personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits as simply one of the costs of doing business. Companies like Loreal and Johnson & Johnson seemingly put their company's profits ahead of protecting the health of their customers. Hair relaxer cancer lawyers think now may be the time for those who have developed breast cancer, uterine cancer, or ovarian cancer, and have used Loreal hair straightener products, or other brands, to file a claim to seek the lump-sum monetary compensation they deserve. Two specific brands of LOreal chemical hair straighteners, Brazilian Blowouts and Keratin Treatments are mentioned in the California lawsuit. The California lawsuit states that "LOreal knew or should have known of the hazards associated with its hair straightening products" but failed to warn consumers of these risks." Formaldehyde, a colorless gas with a pungent odor, is released during the straightening process when the hair is further treated with flat or curling irons and can cause health problems such as eye irritation, respiratory problems, and cancer. Other allegations made in hair straightener lawsuits against LOreal allege that the company failed to provide adequate safety instructions for the use of their hair straighteners with regard to the potential risk of formaldehyde exposure presented.
Respiratory problems that may arise from using Loreal chemical hair straighteners containing formaldehyde include eye, nose, and throat irritation, nagging coughing and wheezing, and breathing difficulty. Medical experts think that prolonged exposure to formaldehyde, four or more times per year over many years, can cause asthma and even cancer. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), prolonged exposure to formaldehyde increases the risk of nasopharyngeal cancer, leukemia, and lymphoma. "Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen that can cause cancer. Exposure to formaldehyde can also cause irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and skin, and can lead to other allergic reactions," according to Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, the deputy chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society. Dr. Stuart Brooks, a pulmonologist and environmental health expert at the University of California, adds: "Formaldehyde is a very toxic chemical, and it can cause irritation to the skin, the eyes, and the respiratory tract. In high enough doses, it can also cause cancer, particularly leukemia and other blood cancers."
