Hair Relaxer Lawsuits Grow To Sixty Against Loreal And Others
Women with cancer who have repeatedly used chemical hair straightener products may have a good case
Monday, February 6, 2023 - Hair relaxers are a type of chemical treatment used to straighten curly or kinky hair and are used by millions of women throughout America. Most beauticians use chemical hair straighteners every day and are well aware of their potential toxicity. Beauticians commonly wear goggles, a mask, and rubber gloves to prevent accidental skin contact with chemicals in hair straighteners and also to lessen the effects of inhaling the product's fumes. Some beauty salons take the precaution of installing special ventilation systems so that the formaldehyde fumes created when the product is heated during styling are vented out of their salon and do not accumulate inside to potentially harmful levels.
Reuters is reporting that a growing number of women including beauty professionals with cancer who have regularly used chemical hair straighteners manufactured by a leading company have filed hair straightener cancer lawsuits seeking monetary compensation. "Nearly 60 lawsuits claiming hair relaxer products sold by Loreal USA Inc and other companies cause cancer and other health problems will be consolidated in Chicago federal court, according to a Monday order from the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation," Reuters reported today. Hair relaxers and straighteners contain certain chemicals that are believed to cause cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France has classified guanidine, a common ingredient in hair relaxers, as "possibly carcinogenic," and leads to kidney, bladder, and other types of cancer in humans. Most women use hair relaxers about every three months or four times per year. At that rate, one might develop hair relaxer uterine cancer, or other form of the disease in only a few years, although sooner is possible. Another potentially deadly chemical in hair straighteners is phthalates. Phthalates may have endocrine-disrupting effects and interfere with hormone/estrogen production in women, which could lead to cancer of the uterus, breast, and ovaries. The endocrine system regulates the production of estrogen in women. Women with endocrine problems report having reproductive system problems like difficulty conceiving and miscarriages. Some have developed uterine and ovarian cancer.
If you or have developed uterine cancer, fibroids, ovarian cancer, infertility, or other types of cancer of the female reproductive system, or have had a loved one die of cancer having regularly used chemical hair straighteners, you should speak with a hair straightener cancer lawyer for legal guidance. You may be eligible to seek lump-sum monetary compensation for lost wages, medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other damages as a jury may deem fit to punish the product's manufacturer for failing to warn their customers of the cancer risks to users. Beauty products are unregulated by the Food and Drug Administration and it is the responsibility of each company to test the beauty products they offer for sale for dangerous health-damaging effects. Most chemical hair straightener attorneys will work on a contingency basis, meaning that you pay them nothing unless there is a favorable court outcome or an out-of-court settlement.
