Medical Experts Confirm The Relationship Between Phthalates And Cancer

Women continue to look the other way when it comes to the safety of their beauty routine

Wednesday, March 1, 2023 - Nine out of ten women using hair straighteners are unaware of the studies that have recently been published linking the use of hair straighteners with developing hormone-disrupting diseases like hair relaxer uterine cancer, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer. The most recent study was published by the National Institute of Health (NIH) where researchers followed 33000 women for more than a decade and found that women using hair straighteners more than four times per year had about double the risk of getting a hormone-disrupting disease. Most commercial chemical hair straighteners are made of chemicals known as phthalates. Phthalates are known to disrupt the body's hormonal balance and lead to potentially life-threatening problems within the female reproductive system. Cancers of the reproductive system are usually treated with the removal of part or all of a woman's reproductive system, leaving them unable to bear children. Breast cancer is an insidious disease that studies link to a woman's exposure to phthalates. Phthalates lead to the abnormal growth of breast cancer cells and tumors caused by an increase in estrogen in the body. Exposure to high levels of platelets when chemical hair straighteners are used during pregnancy could contribute to a variety of pregnancy difficulties. Phthalates may be responsible for reproductive problems, birth defects, low birth weight and preterm births, and other developmental problems for newborns.

The relationship between phthalates causing hair relaxer cancer has been confirmed by numerous medical experts. Dr. Robin Whyatt, a Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, told Medical News Today, "Phthalates have been shown to interfere with the endocrine system, which regulates hormones, and have been linked to a range of hormone-disrupting effects, including reduced sperm count and increased risk of breast cancer." Dr. Heather Patisaul, Professor of Biological Sciences at North Carolina State University, quoted in an article published by Healthline said, "Phthalates are ubiquitous in our environment and can affect hormone production and cause disruption to normal hormone function. This is of particular concern during fetal development and early childhood when the endocrine system is still developing and more vulnerable to disruption." Dr. Laura Vandenberg, Assistant Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, spoke with the Environmental Health News telling readers, "Phthalates can mimic the action of estrogen in the body, leading to hormone disruption and a range of health problems, including reproductive issues, developmental abnormalities, and cancer."

In spite of all of the evidence linking chemical hair straighteners that contain phthalates with cancer, most women chose to ignore the obvious. Societal pressures have caused women to try to conform to the latest beauty trends to look the other way regarding the safety of using chemical hair straighteners. Sales of chemical hair straighteners have skyrocketed in recent years as more and more women, mostly Black women, seek to achieve smoother, straighter hair. An unregulated cosmetics industry has long perpetuated the notion that Black women would look prettier with straight, sleek hair and showcase Black women on the packaging of chemical hair straightener products, in advertisements, and in the media.
